Dosing Charts for Over-the-Counter Medications

Acetaminophen (Numerous Brand Names, Including Tylenol)

Tylenol is one brand name for Acetaminophen. Other brands of acetaminophen include Feverall, Triaminic, Pediacare, etc. If you use other brands, make sure that acetaminophen is the only ingredient on the box. Tylenol can be used every 4-6 hours, but do not administer more than 4 doses in 24 hours. Acetaminophen is dosed by your child’s weight.

Ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil)

Motrin and Advil are both brand names for Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen can be used every 6 hours for the treatment of fever or pain. It can upset the stomach so consider giving it to your child with a small amount of food. Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) work in different ways, and can be used at the same time. If a child on Acetaminophen has a high fever, is uncomfortable, and is not due for another dose for several hours, a dose of Ibuprofen can be given to bridge the gap.

Ibuprofen can be used every 6 hours for pain and fever.  Do not administer ibuprofen to your child if (s)he is less than 6 months of age. Ibuprofen is dosed by your child’s weight.

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

Benadryl is the brand name for Diphenhydramine. It can be used for mild itching and mild allergic reactions. Benadryl comes in a liquid as 12.5mg/1 teaspoon. It can be given every 6 hours as needed.
